A mural has been created in Derry in tribute to Richard and the great friendship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama

The mural, on a gable wall at Great James Street, is based on a photograph taken in 2007 when Richard welcomed our patron His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the city. The work is by UV Arts, the company behind the now famous Derry Girls’ Mural.

Richard said he was “stunned” when he found out about the mural.

“How it came about was Joanna Lumley was in Derry to make a travel show and she wanted to talk to me. What I didn’t know was that the mural was planned. I was supposed to be filmed talking to Joanna around Creggan and the area where I was shot and we were to finish at the Peace Bridge.

“But we got out of the car – I didn’t know where I was, but we were at Great James Street and Joanna said ‘I just wanted to tell you we are standing in front of a big mural. Do you know who is in it; it’s you and the Dalai Lama’,”.

Originally thought to be a joke, Richard only realised that Joanna was, in fact, telling the truth when his family surrounded him.

The mural is based on a picture of the Dalai Lama touching Richard's head when he welcomed him at City of Derry airport in 2007.

“I was speechless when I realised the mural was for real. I have never seen myself in that type of role. I suppose I feel a bit self-conscious but I’m humbled. It’s a real honour in my home city and it includes the Dalai Lama who represents the things I hold important like compassion and forgiveness,”

This mural is located at Great James Street in Derry/Londonderry. CLICK HERE to find it on Google Maps.
